Maine, the northeasternmost state in the United States, is noted for its rocky coastline, nautical history, and natural places such as Acadia National Park, which has granite and spruce islands. Moose may be seen in large numbers at Baxter State Park, which is home to Mt. Katahdin, the northernmost terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Like the candy-striped beacon at West Quoddy Head, several lighthouses may be found along the coast, as can lobster shacks and sandy beaches, including those at Ogunquit and Old Orchard Beach.
